Carolyn Null and her kids Joey, age 9 and Brianna, age 5 had a great time at the Y’s 2014 Trick or Trot 5K and Monster Run for Kids, participating for the second year in this race through Woodward Hill Cemetery and Lancaster County Central Park. Carolyn joined the Y about four years ago to participate in our Project Pounds Away Program (PPA). She signed up for the 2013 Trick or Trot as part of a challenge to participants in Project RIPPED, a follow up program to PPA. Carolyn and the kids were excited to do the Trick or Trot again this year, enjoying dressing up in their Halloween costumes and taking part with good friends from Project Ripped. “We’re like one big family, and Joey and Brianna are our mascots,” Carolyn says with a laugh.
Carolyn and her husband have a competitive streak (he had to work this year, but hopes to attend the 2015 event), which she says her kids have inherited, making the Trick or Trot and Monster Run a great way for them to have fun while enjoying some friendly rivalry. Carolyn notes that her family appreciates that with this event, “it doesn’t matter how you look or how fast you go. It’s about rising to the challenge, with family and friends at your side.” For the Nulls, the Y is “so much more than just a gym;” it’s a place where they come together for activities like family swim time and youth programs and all enjoy Parents’ Night Out (each for their own reasons!). “I wish I had joined a long time ago,” Carolyn shares, “for the friendships we’ve made, the great trainers and classes, and so much more.”
