Lancaster Family YMCA offers free Kindergarten-readiness summer camp
Donation from The CarMax Foundation to help fund program
Lancaster, PA (May 11) – In August, the Lancaster Family YMCA will help children from the School District of Lancaster get ready to succeed in the coming school year through a Kindergarten-readiness summer camp. The summer camp is a free, four-week program made available through a donation from The CarMax Foundation.
The Lancaster Family YMCA currently offers full-day pre-school/pre-K services to families in the community as part of its School Readiness signature program – a component of the YMCA’s Youth Development focus area. The Kindergarten-readiness summer camp is an expansion of these current pre-K services, and part of the Y’s 2015 strategic goal of increasing access to early learning opportunities for children whose families would otherwise lack the financial resources to take advantage of these vital programs.
The YMCA’s Kindergarten-readiness summer camp will serve a total of 20 children entering kindergarten at the School District of Lancaster this fall, and will follow the educational parameters of the district’s early childhood education program – K3/K4. YMCA teachers will use fun learning activities and games to help children develop number, letter, color and shape retention, enhance fine-motor skills, improve reading comprehension and develop the social and emotional skills needed for the classroom ahead.
Lancaster Family YMCA Family Services Director Melissa Adams states, “While a lack of school readiness is an issue across Lancaster County, it’s of particular concern within the School District of Lancaster. While the school serves nearly 400 youth through its free K3/K4 program, there are still several hundred children on the waiting list to participate. Through our partnership with the school district, we’re able to support their efforts by making the Kindergarten-readiness summer camp available to children on that waiting list.”
Enrollment in the YMCA’s Kindergarten-readiness summer camp is currently filled. The program will be held at the Lancaster Family YMCA Child Care Center located at 252 Harrisburg Avenue. The Child Care Center is a Keystone Stars Level 3 center.
