Power Scholars Academy Achieves Summer Gains

Since 2017, the Lancaster Family YMCA has offered Power Scholars Academy in partnership with the School District of Lancaster for students in grades K-4.

Power Scholars Academy™ was developed through a partnership between the YMCA of the USA and the national nonprofit BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life). This program tackles summer learning loss for low-income children living in urban communities who are struggling academically and who lack the resources to access summer learning opportunities. Power Scholars Academy™ offers a holistic learning experience blending academics with enrichment, social-emotional skill development and community engagement with the goal of enhancing overall youth development, academic performance and graduation rates.

At the start and end of the summer, students complete computer-adaptive STAR Reading and Math Assessments, which measure their academic progress against Common Core State Standards.

This summer the Y served 209 students in Power Scholars with the scholars achieving +1.5 average months gained in reading skills and +2 average months gained in math skills.

91% of parents reported an increase in their child’s confidence, and 86% of parents reported an improvement in their child’s ability to overcome challenges as a result of the program.

Power Scholars is offered free of cost to the families. Gifts to the YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign help provide the funds needed to continue this program and the impact it is making with children in this community.
